Mopani Wood

I doubt they'd lock you up. They might impound it as "exotic" but I'm very doubtful of it so long as it's declared and all that stuff. IOW, don't try to smuggle it in.

right ,cool - its only 5E for a nice big piece here - and i hear it takes a lot less time to leach out all the tannins. i dont see why i should have to do anything but put it in the luggage , its a piece of wood and people bring wooden african souvenirs on planes all the time.

nomal bogwood will lower your PH but mopani shouldnt alter it much at all.
It does indeed as well :) in my hard water with high pH is brought it down from something around 8.4 to 7.4

Mopani leach out tons of tannins - where as bogwood (that's been sitting in a bog for yonks and leaching out tannins for months or years) should leach very little :)
But no, you're not allowed to legally import or export any animal or plant life across borders.

Is boiling wood such as Mopani and Bogwood a good idea to speed up the process instead of just soaking it?

In my experience, boiling wood compromises the structure and hence longivity of the wood. It's by far better to soak it in very hot water and changed daily for a couple of weeks. Then put in in your tank with some carbon in the filter and it should be almost fine. It just depends on the water / wood ratio and the type of wood.
As I've said, bogwood will generally leach a lot less than mopani. Mopani is just chopped trees - where as bogwood has been lying in a bog for a certain length of time.

mopani shouldnt leach either.

youll find more bogwood leaches than mopani.

i had 2 pieces that didnt release a drop but i kno people with bogwood still in buckets after months.

Hi all!

Ive been boiling a piece of BOGWOOD for 1 week now.Hard to get rid of all the color!!

Good luck with the Moepani wood.

And the logic behind that ?
In all the years through all the countries I've lived, every single mopani piece of wood has always leached a ton for weeks. And every single piece of bogwood hardly at all. Just my personal observation and experience with a lot of wood.
