Hi all,

I have had a few pieces of Mopani Bogwood soaking for just over three weeks now. It has got to a point where the water now only changes very very slightly in colour. Do you think it is o.k to put it in my tank now. Also would a Carbon filter help to remove any unwanted colour that may still leach out?

Thanks,

Rich

Depending on the fish you are keeping the bogwood should be okay. Unless they would be majorly effected by slight changes in the water that the tannins in the bogwood would have. I think the carbon should help somewhat with the discoloration caused by the bogwood. Not sure how much of an effect it would have though.

Mopani wood is not bogwood :)

Mopani wood is just chopped down dead trees.
Bogwood has been lying in a river / peat bog and as a result has been exposed to long term contact with water and will therefore leach little to nothing.

Mopani wood will almost always leach a ton for weeks to months.
As you've already been soaking it for so many weeks now - I suggest just putting it in your tank and if the discolouration bothers you, add a carbon pad to your filter.

With your normal weekly water changes, it should completely clear shortly.

I do not suggest boiling wood - in my experience it loosens the structure of the wood and makes it just leach more !!

Ps: there's no "need" to pre-soak the wood to get rid of tannins. It's totally harmless to fish :good:

Damn! I just got this Stunning piece thinking it was bogwood. Ah well I guess it's a case of soak it and see then.
That's Mopani Wood indeed :good: but bogwood it most certainly is not :)
Some sellers are a bit naughty and put all "popular search terms" in the title to draw people to their listing. As you can see "Discus" in thrown in there for good measure too. What on earth does Discus have to do with a piece of wood ? It's in there because many people search for Discus related products.

Not many people search for "mopani" but most people bogwood. A bit of a misconception I'm afraid.
If you feel strongly about it, you can report the seller to eBay for misrepresentation. They have actually started clamping down on people (and removing listings) who advertise to lure people in the title by using popular search terms that are unrelated to the item.

I might well do, he should at least have something on his page to say that it requires a long soaking. I'll wait until my purchase arrives though, so if there are any other problems I can include them at the same time.
Cheers for this, I guess it's my own fault for not reading the pinned 'types of wood' thread before gping 'ohhhh preeettttyyy' ~click~ !

I have succesfuly managed to remove all the colour from my bogwood. see the pics in the pictures section.

I boiled them twice for 20mins a go, then soaked them in cold water over night for afew days and then during the day pouring boiling water over them two or three times.

eventualy it just runs out of colouring to leech. My water is crystal clear. looks very nice. :D

I also managed to eliminate the leeching colour. Didn't have to boil the wood though. I just kept changing the stained water with freshly boiled. This took just three days, with a total of 6 boiling water changes. I decided it was OK when the last boiling water change resulted in almost zero leeching out after half a day.

Bogwood or Mopani?

Mopani, from the LFS. I've also bought a piece from ebay, but had a breakage problem. Waiting for replacement to be sent.

I've also bought (dry) bogwood from the LFS that did not need much soaking at all.
