I found 1x 12'' cathode was fine.
but then, 6 blue LED's connected to an old phone charger did a good job on a 4' tank.. post on how its done, available here via forum search.

I run 1 strip of 12 at the front of the tank, which creates a nice illuminated area whilst leaving the rear in darkness, should the fish prefer that.
