I just recently noticed that my dalmatian molly has Popeye. It is only in his right eye and it has been there for a couple days with no sign of getting better. I have my suspicions that bad water conditions are to blame as it is a fairly new tank and it may not have been fully cycled. I had my water tested at my local aquarium store and they said that my ammonia and nitrates were too high. I also have a creamsicle molly that likes to chase the dalmatian molly around sometimes, so maybe he could of injured him, i'm really not sure. I did however read that if its only one eye, it is usually caused by trauma.
The fish is showing a reduced activity level, and occasionally has twitches on the right side of his body (same side with popeye). He also seems to have a small red-pinkish patch on his back, that just appeared today. He is still eating and has been ever since he got sick.
So far I have began to add beneficial bacteria into my aquarium to try and get it to cycle a bit quicker to prevent my ammonia and nitrates from spiking, as well as isolating the dalmatian molly in a breeding container (still in the same tank) so he wont be harassed in his weaken state. I'm currently doing 30% daily water changes to try and reduce ammonia and nitrate. I also heard that adding epsom salt will help reduce the popeye. Is this true?
My tank is 10 gallons, Terta PF10 Filter, tempreture is at 26 degree Celsius, PH is 7. It is home to a male betta (not at all aggressive), 2 platy's, 1 black molly, 1 creamsicle molly, and four Cory catfish. I do 20% water changes weakly and changed that to 20% bi-weekly last week.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
