Molly Now Dead Another Dying Rapidly - Still Columnaris Or Something E

Hi Elissa,

What PH is your tap water? We really need to figure out what's causing the PH to rise in your main tank. In the meantime if you did have to use it, just acclimatise the fish slowly by mixing the water. The nitrates are nothing to worry about, or rather the lack of them, they'll soon appear!

I'm glad things are starting to settle down, maybe your female was constipated? Hence the new slimline appearance, or perhaps she was pregnant and aborted. Fingers crossed for a full recovery!

Happy Easter
Anna xx

Hi Anna,

Female is now hanging about the back of the heater? She's resting and eating those algae wafers from the bottom tho so I'm trying desperately hard not to worry bout her. The other molly is wimming about good style (and baby mollys are healthy and happy, growing bigger by the day.)

I'm gonna throw in some peas. Usually do a couple times a week anyway and if female has just been constipated she maybe needs another wee helping hand?

I've actually been testing the tap water some days since last week

15th March - 6.6
16th March - 6.4
18th/19th/21st March - 6.8

So how on earth it read as 6 in hosp tank yesterday I don't know. Maybe I misread but I really don't think so as I tested twice.

By 'mixing the water' do you mean some fresh water from the tank and some main tank water?- sorry another question!:)

Main tank stats from yesterday:
ph 7.2
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate - between 5 & 10

Have put the black sponge filter/ piece of filter cut from the main tank filter back in the main tank filter.
That was right wasn't it?

Another question - if a poorly fish has been in the hosp/quarantine tank and you're putting that piece of filter back in the main tank's filter once the fish is better ( or passed away god forbid!) is that ok?

Me with my mind that doesn't stop thinking ( you'll have noticed!)

If the fish has had a disease and the hosp tanks water - with that disease- is being passed thro the hosp tank filter surely you're putting that disease in the main tanks filter by putting it back in there? And any meds used are bad for the filters? ( I know now thats the only way you can have a piece of filter ready in an emergency right enough so must be ok but I'd just like to clarify please.)

Sorry, being a pain - trying to learn!! :)

Have a lovely Easter Sunday. We're heading round to Jim's mum and dads later, and all the family will be there for Easter Sunday dinner so gonna try and relax for the first time in days. Tho everyone will most definitely ask hows the aquarium going?! You'll be famous in East Kilbride( just outside Glasgow)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Cheers!!
Elissa

Do you know, I had the feeling you were in my neck of the woods, you're only about 10 miles away from me! Oh wait a minute.........do you work? I'm going to PM you.

Anyway, yes wash any filter under the tap that's been in the hospital tank before putting back in the main tank, it won't take long to cultivate some bacteria.

The PH business is funny. Oh and now I know you're local what fish shop were you using? You don't have to name and shame publicly, I'll send you a PM. xx

You need to aerate tap water before testing it otherwise you will not get an accurate reading

all good advice from scooterchick tho :good:

Anna, thanks again. I'll PM you back :) XXX
