My son(5) and I went to the local fish shop yesterday just to have a look around. He started blubing, daddy I want that fish, I want that fish. It was a mini molly. So I asked the lady if I could have 3 mollies. 1 Male and 2 Females. She didn`t know how to tell the sex`s, neither did I. So I just said give me 3 and I`ll take my chance that atleast 1 will be a male and 1 a female. When I got home I jumped online and straight to this forum to search and find out what they were. All females LOL. One of them looked very squarish but to me (unexperienced) thought maybe she had about a week maybe 2 left. How wrong was I. She had 12 fry today, 1 got eaten by a guppy before I could get to my net. I managed to save eleven of them. Lucky I have a spare tank ready and sitting there. It was supposed to be for my guppy fry once they happen. I`m just happy as this was my first time have a fish give birth. Its all been recorded and I look forward to my guppies doing the same soon. But I gotta invest in some more tanks now so I can seperate m/f when possible.

Sorry for carrying on but I just happy. I`m a DADDY now.

Min.

Edit: after 4 hours she has now given another 2 more fry.

The female still looks big. Is it possible she will give some more fry? Well i`m off to bed and will see in the morning, but then again maybe if she does give more fry they`ll be eaten by the time I get up

i dont think she should have anymore fry for now.
congratulations by the way and welcome to the forum

That's nature for you! I wouldn't worry about it too much. She'll have another batch in a few more weeks! So, you see, you don't need to buy a male livebearer to get fry! Usually at least one of the females is already going to be pregnant. Good luck with all the fry. Do you have a plan for them once they've grown?

No plans as of yet for these fry. I`m looking and setting up a system to breed some nice guppies in the near future though. I`ve just got all the molly fry in a 2 and 1/2 foot tank by themselves. No plans for the mollies, maybe get rid of them to the local fish shop or friends. Might keep 1 or 2 if they turn out different to the one`s I already have.

Your female could continue to drop for several hours but will stop after that and probably not drop again for about 6 weeks.

She hasn`t dropped any more, out of 14 I got to save the Lucky No: 13. If she does have more fry in about 6 weeks will it be ok to put the fry with this current batch of fry???
The tanks is big enough I think, 2&1/2 foot 100Liters.
I`m currently building a stand for my sons 3 foot tank which is a on crappy stand atm. After that I will get a 4 or 6 foot tank which I want as a main display tank in the lounge room. Once all this is done i`ll be starting on a rack system for the garage for breeding purposes. But this won`t be for a while yet. Still looking, reading, writing and learning.
#29###, I just realisd that I need to get another tank asap for my pregnant guppy. I would like to put here fry into a seperate tank to the molly fry.
Wow, I can see this hobby is going to turn into a lot of tanks.

Cheers.

Molly and guppy fry can be housed together as long as there is not too much age difference. I recently brought home some newborn swordtail fry and placed them with fry of the same species who were about a month old. So far things are going just fine and they have been together 5 days now. All are growing and prospering on specialized feedings to promote fast growth. I need to reduce the numbers in my tank and it is only about 3 months to my next club auction. I want them mature enough that they will sell well by then.

Hi everyone, is it possible for a molly to give some fry just 4 days after she already gave some? The reason I ask is that I have just found 3 more fry. Not sure if they are hers or a guppies. The guppy has a red tube like thing near her anus. Not sure if this is the birthing tube or not. Wasn`t there yesterday or earlier today.
I`ve seen a male trying to nip at her under their and a few of the female guppies are also following her everywhere.
Also the molly is hanging around the bottom where she last had her fry.

Edit: Just found another.
I just did a 20% water change today. Could it be possible that these fry where from the molly 4 days ago and i`ve never seen them. Maybe hiding in with the gavel or fake plants? I look carefully at the tank several times a day and haven`t seen any fry in there since 4 days ago. These 4 that I found now look smaller than the ones from 4 days ago.

Glad you have it figured out. It would be likely that some fish other than the one who originally dropped to be dropping fry but it could also have been that you missed a few when you were busy scooping the first drop. Since you spotted the guppy dropping, that particular question was avoided.
