 I checked the tank today and Molly my Tiger Barb has furry white stuff on her tail what should I do? (she is in a seperator within the tank because she was getting beaten up by some of the other barbs and is missing most of her tail and bottom fins)

fin rot and a fungus? you should QT and treat. i kno melafix helps with those things

no need to treat the whole tank unless all the fish are sick

Do you have any pics?
While it is debatable, i personally don't think melafix is suitable for fin rot (which from the sounds of things it may not be) but certainly not for a fungal infection.
:dunno:

If you use pimafix and melafix at the same time it may work, but those are kind of weak. If it is very bad you will probably need something stronger.

Agreed with germ, while melafix will halp repair damaged tissue, you need to treat the finrot separately. The interpret range do a good finrot, can you get hold of that?

Also how big is your tank? How many fish do you have? Do you know your water stats? How long has the tank been set up? How many tiger barbs do you have? They're best to be kept in groups of at least 6 to prevent bullying.

Actually it's probably best to treat for the fungus first (Interpret again) and then the finrot. However you can use Melafix along side the other meds which will hopefully stop the rot from getting any worse.

Is that you in your avvy? you're very pretty ;-)

Yes that is me in the pic..... thankyou your very kind

Thankyou all for your advise unfortunatly Molly didn't make it through the night  the rest of my barbs (3... one tiger and two green) are healthy and happy and seem to have chilled out they are no longer aggressive and beating each other up YAY  .... I will still get at least another 3 since they are happier in groups of six or more.

I don't know germ, I've used Melafix to treat very minor/mild cases of fin rot and have been successful. I've never had to used it for severe cases though.

I'm sorry your molly died ms. fishies.

It sounded like a fungus, or really bad fin rot. in any case I would watch your other fish in that tank to be sure they dont contract anything, and check your water parameters to be sure everything is good. Fin rot is typically caused by poor water quality.

Thankyou :) ..... my water levels tested well ... Molly was being pestered by another Barb who nipped away most of her tail and bottom fins so i think the fungus may have been caused by stress.... I will how ever keep a close eye on my other barbs I would be devastated to lose another little fish

Hi Germ I have a question that you may be able to help me with (Scootergirl may be able to help to)...........I want to find some other fish that are compatable with my Barbs some people have suggested gourami's because they are agressive also ... after some research I have found that there are quite a few different gourami's I noticed that you yourself have some gourami's....... is there a gourami that you would suggest that I put in with my Barbs ... and should I get a pair or do they like to be in bigger groups????

You'd be best looking into Trichogaster trichopterus which comes under various common names and colour morphs, heres a link to a few pics--> http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=209002 if you click on the picture this'll take you to the species index which'd provide further info.
If you'd like more than one then get 2/3 females and a male. Don't get more than one male though, this'd be asking for trouble.
They can get to 6" as well; make sure you don't overstock.

People may suggest you try colisa lalia (dwarf gourami) while they would probably be quite suitable behaviour wise, due to the inherent health issues associated with the species at the moment, i'd advise against it.

Due to the provision of this info, if you do aquire a trichopterus, you must feed me a pic or 2 for the ID thread (so there).
Hope that helps.
