Hi all

Our Molly is giving birth at the moment and has 4 so far. Trouble is the fry seem to have a light coloured lump under their bellies, maybe the egg from inside the mother, deformed??? Not sure. They are trying to swim but a couple seem to be only able to swim short distance before flipping upside down.

Can anyone tell me if there is any hope for them, if you have experienced something similar. It's really upset me, there's nothing I can do except hope they can survive this.

Thank you

Charlie

i had the same problem with my mollie yesterday morning beleive it or not she managed to get 2 out with what sounds like the same problem nd she was lying on the bottom all day and wen i looked this morning she was dead and so were the baby fry, it surprised me though because i have had that mollie for a year and had countless amounts of fry and then it happend now. i was wondering the same as you.

Mother seems to be doing fine at the moment but has eaten about 4 of the fry. They were still alive. We have 3 left at the moment but they are not moving alot. They can swim up but then, I presume, they sink to the bottom cause of the extra weight.
We are just keeping our fingers crossed that she will be ok.
Sorry for the death of you Molly.

Charlie

We have tried to take photos so many times but our stupid dig camera is too slow.
I would say they do look like egg sacks. We have only one left so it's just a matter of time to see if it survives. She is still giving birth but she has had one fry stuck for a while even whilst she has been giving birth. The head and tail are out and I think it's the egg sack that is still inside her.
Bless her.
Can the fry survive if the sack is still attached? Will it reduce in size eventually?
Any advice you can give is appreciated. I think the advice will help many of us newbies
Thank you

When I put my molly in the breeding tank she had a few fry that looked like that and they died shortly after being born. They had a HUGE sac on their stomachs. I assumed they were not yet ready for birth so I put the mother back in the main tank where she stopped giving birth and 2 days later gave birth to 20 more Healthy and full term fry. She might be stressed out like mine was. Do you have her in a different tank or a net or something? You may want to put her back if you do and see what happens. I had to scoop up the frt out of my main tank.

She was put in a seperate tank. She had about 12 altogether. 1 survived but died after about an hour. We put her back in the main tank and she was fine but she had a dead fish hanging from her and the egg sack that was attached to it's body was still inside the mother (if that makes sense). I was worried this may cause her problems but the male helped bring it out and swimming around and eventually it came out. She then had an egg stuck there which finally came out after about 1/2 an hour.
We are keeping an eye on her but her belly has gone down a lot so that may have been it. I'm just glad she's ok.
Anyway, the good news is that our guppy that was expecting had her babies (48) about 1 hour after the Molly drama and I can say at the moment they are all doing great and mother is well.

Wow, what a Sunday.

Wow, this is a good experience ya...

At last, I still feel that to let the female fish to give birth in community tank naturally is a better way, at least it is not stressed up and lesser fry is surviving to avoid over stocking. Heeee... Just my opinion. :)
