My black molly gave birth to what I can tell is four little fry. They are soo cute! I bought a smaller tank and put the fry into the little tank.. sadly one died :'( he/she had jumped out of the net and I looked but by the time I found him/her , he/she was dead. RIP :'(

The molly seems a little depressed in the big tank .... she isn't swimming around that much since I moved the fry.. or maybe she is depressed because her mate had died a couple of weeks ago? (my daughter found the fish food and fed the fish too much.. and when I found the gold / orange molly, he had sunk to the bottom instead of floated up. He was obese.)

Question is this:

I did go to the pet store and get an adult molly for the gal to swim with... and I think it is a male (i just looked..oops!)

when I feed the fry, I have been making the fish flakes small, and I do watch them eat it. How often do I feed the fry? How many times a day?

Could the fish still be preggers?? I don't know much about fish. I had them as a kid but they never reproduced.. probably because they were egg layers and the eggies prob. died :( if she is, how many more fish will they have ? like what is the average fry do mollies have?

I also have three neon tetra in the tank, I don't think they will be laying any eggies soon.

the fry are very cute to watch them swim around... I put them in my bedroom as the 10 gal tank is in my daughter's room (it helps her sleep at night. she is 4.) .

oh and last question:

when can I put the fry back into the tank? or should I keep them in my own room ?

Hi, firstly congrats on fry. I have currently 3 high fin platy fry which are really cute (i did have 8 but the others died). I have had them for 2 months andthey are in abreeding net which i bought which hangs onto the main tank. Platys grow slowly and the bigger fish will eat them given the chance. I feed them crushed flaked food 4-6 times a day. Now they are a little bigger i feed them freeze dried brineshrimp as it is really beneficial. If your neons won't be able to eat the fry put them in their tank, but i would get a breeding net. Good luck :)

How long has the big tank been set up? How big is it and how is it filtered? and the fry tank?

Have you had the water tested at all?

Have you done a water change recently?

Sorry for all the questions, but we need to know more details before we can get to the bottom of the problem :good:

Feed the fry two or three times a day, but a tiny, tiny amount. Try and get some live plants in there, as that'll help with tiny particles of food and with water quality, and do lots of small water changes, every day if possible. You don't want to have any rotting food in there, so a bare bottomed tank would really be best, as it would be easier to keep clean.

You'll need to keep them in there fow a few weeks, unitl they're big enough not to be eaten

I used the same water from the fish tank and it is being filtered. I looked and the mama fish is swimming around.. although I am now looking closely, that could have been the male and the fish that died recently could have been a female? But the depressed fish that is now swimming around isn't as fat.. oh well,

the picture taken above was from today. I don't know how old they are! It was noticed in the tank this morning. I had the molly for about three months now.

now my question is, how old are these fry? I take it they are newborn?? The other fish didn't seem to want to eat the little fry but I was being cautious and removed them from the big tank.. soo cute to look at. They are swimming around in the little tank in my room. .scared of my human face LOL... but I talk to them and then they move from the corner where they were all grouped together.

If you have fry, you can separate them and do water changes as needed o keep them healthy. That brings you back to the more basic questions really. Do you do enough water changes to keep your fish, in this case fry, healthy? If you do, you can expect great fry survival. If you do not, your fry survival will be less and you can expect some losses.
