Hi,

One of my female Mollies seems to have a baby stuck in her. I noticed it abou an hour and a half ago, and it has not moved since. It seems to be mostly out of her apart from the head. She has had a least 1 live one as it was swimming about my tank. This is the first time I have seen a Molly giving birth so dont know if this is normal or not. What do I do?

Hope you can help,

Thanx.

yeah has she passed it yet? if not turn the lights out if you think shes straining until someone like 5teady or someone can help
scot :good:

You have to be careful but you can gently pull the tail area.
Sometimes you press there tummy but not hard to damage the mother or babies.

has she had the fry yet?

I dont know yet. I had to leave her in the breeding tank and come to work. She seemed really distressed though, so I hope she is alright. I will check on her as soon as I get home and see how she is. Fingers crossed she will be fine and ready for some food, and there will lots of wee babies.

They sometimes can take a while to push them out but no longer than a minute, if she has not passed the one that is stuck yet the other will be at risk.

I dont recomend gently pressing her stomach or pulling the fry out, if it wont come naturally then doing otherwise could cause further damage to the fish internally (although some ppl hav succesfully done it)

Just out the lights and let her be, put a cover over the tank if in bright room, maybe up the temp a couple of degrees as well.,

Other than, i hope she gets them all out safely.

keep us updated.

Hey everyone,

Good news, I just got home to find 22 little babies (so 23 altogether if you count the one I had found this morning), and a healthy, happy mother.

She also dropped 2 eggs and the 1 baby that must have been causing her all the problems this morning. It must have been still born and was a good bit bigger than the other live fry. It looked like it had already started to decay inside her... but hey... she is good now and the rest of the fry seem fine.

Thanx very much to everybody who got back to me, I really appreciate it.

Thats great, congrats, like i say, sometimes is bets just let them get on with (like in nature) they dont have/get help to drop the fry.

Very happy for you that all is ok :)

If the fish was decaying inside her I would issolate her and use an internal bacterial med.
When fry get stuck you can help them out but you do have to know what you are doing as you can damage the mother and babies.
Bit like helping a cow when a calf gets stuck.

Congrats on the fry.
