Mollies

HOw long are Mollies pregnant for, silver nad black ones. I think ones just dropped some fry as shes gone from plump to thin again. I was just curious because I never see the fry so I guess their eaten straight away. Maybe if I had an idea when they were coming I could put her in a fry trap. How long can they stay in the fry traps before getting stressed also?

the shorter the time in the breeding traps the better. what fish do you have in youre tank apart from the mollys? do you have any hiding places for fry such as gaps between rocks because some may be still alive so have a look and if you find some put them into the trap and i feed livebearer fry liquifry no2 and then no3.

I did look, cant' see any. I have serpae tetras in their with them and I think they'll eat anything. Do you just leave the breeding trap in the tank at all times or only have it in when your going to be putting a fish in it. I mean I find it difficult to know when a mollies going to pop so don't have any idea when to actually put the fish in.

i think its around 4/5 weeks they have them, before dropping fry there stomach should 'square off' \_____/

i only put the trap in the tank when the fry have arrived. i use a rigid sided trap to put the mother in so that the fry can drop into the bottom part. i then take the mother out and put her back into the tank. i then take the babies out of the rigid sided trap and put them in a netted trap that is bigger so they can grow better. also the netted trap is so simple as the water can just flow through it so you do not have to worry about stagnant water etc.

Right picture of a couple of my silver mollies. I'm not sure how well you can see shes not that fat but her stomach looks squared. Reckon she might be pregnant or maybe ready to drop?

I'm pretty sure mollies have fry every month once they start.

the fin on the bottom of a fish (anal fin) is they way to tell in platies and mollies. when its swimming if it out lyk a fan then its a female and if its a male it will stay tucked in.

They're almost always ready for breeding. LOL They reach sexual maturity at 3-4 months and give birth roughly once a month. Here's a link to 5teady's thread on determining when your livebearer will give birth:
