Just out of curiosity, what makes people choose each kind over the others?

Personally, The second I saw the sword tails, I knew I had to have them... I didnt even glance at other fish. what are the pros and cons of each breed?

platies - I only chose platies as I had no luck with guppies.
Pros-females are as vibrant as males, very, very hardy, very active, not fussy about food
cons - they eat their babies!!! lol

Swordtails - They are gorgeous! I got my first swordtail yesterday, he was the only one in the tank and he is stunning I had to have him. I think they are quite hardy too. I didn't know if I could have them or not, I don't know why I thought they were any different. I am so glad I got him!
cons of them is around here they are very rare.

I love pure black and pure white sailfin mollies but they are too big for my tank plus my waters too soft :(

My favorites are platies out of all of those because they are smaller, And you can have more

Mollies
Pros - very attracting, many colors, isn't a schooling fish, hardy, eats most food, can tolerate a wide range of water parameters, can be kept in a brackish setup,
Cons - large, breeds like crazy, cannot be kept in a nano setup, will not last in soft water

Platies - can be kept in a nano setup, small, makes and females are just as colorful, will tolerate a wide range of water parameters, does better in softer water than mollies, will eat anything, active, personality filled.
Cons - breeds like crazy,

I like all three about equally. Swordtails in my tanks are wild types and never see anything but their own species. I seldom can find mollies or platies that are pure, as they would be in the wild, so I go by appearance for them. If I like a particular fish, I get it. I actually am quite attracted to the domestic mollies I have seen that have orange and black bodies but I rarely see them.
