when i set up my tank i got the usuall popular community fish, mollies, guppies, platys etc etc
but ive just put 2 "platys" and a net as they look like they are about to drop BUT ive just been looking at them from the top of the tank ( birdseye) and im not sure they are platys at all. the mouth is literally skimming the surface effortlessley to get food, where as a platys would have to point up a bit to take it from the surface( does that make sense? )
i dont know how i didnt notice before as i do have platys in the tank as i said.. maybe cos theyre bright orange, body seems to be longer than reg platys to

:shout: oh ill shut up cos im confusing myself now!!

from the top of theses girls im sure i can see baby eyes ( be about the shoulder area if they had any)

ok so the point is......... as they may not be platys ( which im not 100% on) and could well be mollies ( and i really cant convince myself either way apart from the mouth)
will they both be ok in the same net to drop, they are both huge and look about ready to drop but seem to be squabbling a bit. ive put lots of plants in there but never had molly fry before, so dunno what im meant to do  ( only had platy uptill last night when i had guppy)
only have 1 net spare as i have guppy fry in one ( born last night) and a ready to drop guppy in another for the past few hours

any help would be great :)

I'm not sure how we can help you identify your fish Shelagh. As far as fry are concerned, if you have what look like small fish instead of just eyes and a tail, you will have molly fry. I have a picture of some molly fry the day they were born and as you can see they are just very small copies of their mother. The mollies in this picture were dropped while I was at work and I took the picture when I got home so they were less than 8 hours old. It also demonstrates that a molly female is not a very voracious predator. I never did take her out of the tank before her next drop.

A platy or guppy fry looks like little more than eyes with a tail at that age.

came home this morning to find that she had given birth.. about 10 are alive and normal and about 30 were all deformed and dead on the bottom of the breeding net :-(

cant imagine what went wrong, she appeared very calm
they are definatley mollies by the way, thnaks for that oldman
i wont be using a net for the next lot, she may have been stressed even if not displaying signs of it :(
