I managed to get hold of some glosso today and after a lot of reading up i found it it needs lots of light! Since i already have riccia which also needs light and it is growing but not amazingly well, I have managed to modifiy my hood to hold another 15W tube! Meaning i have 3 starter motors and 3 tubes under the hood! 45W !! with a 16 gallon tank!

It all sounded good to me, but now reflecting on it, its not going to get too hot or too bright is it?

Depends on the type of starter, I have two of the arcadia type which I have found get quite warm and also have the Hagen Glomax twin starter which doesnt get hot at all, barely even warm!

One thing, have you attached the starters to the underside of the hood as well? If the cable will stretch it would be worth putting these outside the hood, away from spashing water and condensation, but this depends on the type you have, some are designed to be waterproof for under the hood.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the reply,
The starters are outside of the tank and outside of the hood!! They are in the cabinet under the tank on a shelf, the cables just about reach!

They are arcadia starters...but if they are outside the tank, does it matter if they get hot or not?

Not really, mine are fine and after all thats what they have been designed for. You may just not want to pile stuff on top of them! Bennett suggested putting the CO2 bottles next to them as it'll keep them warmer and so produce more stable CO2! inventive use of the heat!
