Im starting a 55 us gallon tank with African cichlids. I currently have a cobalt blue and Midnight Demasoni. I was just wondering if i could mix various lake species? I also wanted to know how many cichlids i could put in the tank?
would this list of fish work for the 55 gallon? Altolamprologous calvus, Julidochromis transcriptus gombi, frontosa, Nimbochromis Venustus, Haplochromis. My main prority is getting some calvus. Can to mix species of the calvus?
Tank decor is some plastic plants, two fake logs of medium size, sandy bottom and dimensions are a standard 55 which is 47.5 inches long, 12 inches wide and 19" high
Stay away from the fronts and Venustus. Both get large for a 55 gallon tank as adults. They also like to eat smaller fish. The julies would be fine with the calvus. Its not recommended to keep different calvus/Comps in the same tank. There is a good possiblity of crossbreeding. If you have no desire to save any fry then its ok to mix them. However if you do get males and females one male will most likely become dominant and make life hell for the other males regalerdless of teh type. I would go with one type. Both julies and calvus like to occupy rocks so there should be several piles. I would also add some cyprichromis to the tank. Preferable a non jumbo type. These are group fish so a t leats 10 should be a good starting point. They like to swim in open wate.
You want to mix cichlids from Lake Malawi and those from Lake Tanganyika.
The have different diets.
The Malawis eat algae in the wild and prefer a vegetarian based diet. The Tangs eat small insects and crustacians in the wild and therefore prefer something meatier. You have to be mindful that both get the nutrients they need.
Also they like plenty of rocks in the tank. Roughly 1/3 volume. With lots of hidey holes etc for smaller/weaker fish to hide in if they are being harrased.
