Mixing other fish in Betta tank?

We are new to Betta raising. I've been reading about them on this site since last fall. My son has been begging for one so we broke down and got him one for his birthday a few weeks ago. He has him in a 2.5 gal rectangular tank with no filter or heater (I like to keep the house very warm anyways). His question is he would like to get a bottom feeder or something like that to put in the tank with Fabio (Betta). What fish could he put in there that would be ok for both fish?

African Dwarf Frog is the only thing I can think of. You could try ghost shrimp as well, but they can sometimes find a bettas fins tasty and more than likely the betta would eat the ghost shrimp

how bout a snail? lil kids always find those interesting.
