just a simple question as a freind of mine has a couple of 9 litre plastic goldfish bowls and would like to keep male bettas yet doesnt want a heater

in the UK you NEED a heater. Ideally the water should be between 24 and 28 so 75 and 82. Its too cold in the winter here to not have a heater.

Yep, unless your room is heated to mid 20s C 24/7 a heater is an essential in the UK. You can get small heaters for bowls of that size.

I wouldn't even say just winter is too bad, anywhere outside summer is probably too cold for a Betta, they like their water nice and warm. A betta will be far more disease resistant and active in a heated bowl/tank.

yeah i gottah agree with Glod... he's got it perfect. And a 9L (about 2.5-3g) is easy enough to find a heater for. Try to keep it around 76- 82...I find that anything below that and they dont act normal and don't live as long

My boy lived in about a 10lt tank with no heater for 3yrs and was extremly happy.

It wasnt until I came on here that I learnt that they can be put in tropical tanks.

They're a pretty hardy fish that easily takes room temperate...which for us is around 68.

There are major Betta folk that like to let their Betta tough it a bit. It is felt they are stonger and healthier for it. I would not debate it with them. Myself, I like to see them happy, so 75+ish and clean water seems to make them happy.
