Hi all,

I was wonderng, what is the minimum sized tank for a betta sorority(sp?)

Thanks, orange shark

Not sure what really defines a sorotiy, is it just a nice way of saying tank of fish? In which case I guess the 5g per fish rule may still count :) dont hold me to it but would make sense.

same rule applies for female bettas as it does with every other fish. I think the general rule is 1gal per 1inch of fish. The most important thing is that you have lots of nice hiding places so they can get out of each others way

Really? I would of related them more closely to species such as dwarf puffer who require 3g per fish to reduce aggression. Well, as said, i know very little about betta's :)

Females are pretty good when they are in groups of 4 plus and as long as they have places to get out of the way when one has a paddy the 1g to 1" rule works well, thats how i have my girls set and they are all fine and dandy. Thing is if you get a very aggressive female it wont make a difference if she has 1g or 6g of space she will still go out of her way to bully the others in with her.

 my girls wont have anything to do with each other. They just argued ,in the end I separated them.

I have 12 girls in a 22 gallon and before I sorted the tank out had hardly any hiding places and they've never argued or bullied. They always have slight fin tears or splits but never anything terrible and only ever seen 1 of them flare and that was the day it came here. They are actually good friends, they protect each other and stuff. Very sweet. I guess I am lucky.

I've been wondering about this lately as well. I can't seem to find too much on it! So, is it generally accepted that a 10 gallon would be the minimum? Or could you do like a 5.5 gallon with maybe 4 females and lots of hiding places? (Sorry to ask here, didn't want to start the same topic!)

A 10 gallon is the smallest I would use, because the girls seem to have less aggression in groups of 6 or more and you can fit that in a 10.

ive recently had to seperate one tank as all hell let loose and it was like a riot at a womens prison. it really does depend on the bettas in question to how they react to eachother, some are utter nightmares but most are a good community. having a tank with roughly the same size females is the key to getting a happy medium as well.

The minimum size for a Betta is one gallon. One fish per one gallon is fine. If more then you would want to go with a minimum of a five gallon tank with 3 females.

I would say a 15gallon would be a nice size for 7 female bettas. As i've read that anywhere from 5-7 is a good number for a sorority. Females bettas can get quite big, at least the one my sister had was quite big, she was 2.5inches long.

A 10 gallon with 5-6 girls would be minimum I think. I have a 20 with 7 girls (used to be 8 but one passed away not do to aggression issues) and everything is working out it has almost been a year!! Another important thing is to have a very well decorated tank.
