Morning people,

Anyone ever grown Anubias barteri var nana 'petite', the really small tropica mutation?

Think its exactly what I need for my bogwood in my nano, but from what I understand most anubias dont like really storng, direct light, and there is going to be lots of that over the tank! Should I put some floating plants over it to help?

Or other suggections for small pants? It needs to be around 3-4 inches tall fully grown.

Thank you :)

Sam

EDIT - I promise to get round to setting this tank up soon (in the next week or so if all goes well), so I can show you all what the all the advice has been for! :D

Shading Anubias is a very good idea. Direct light will lead to algae growth on the leaves.

The 'petite' variety is a lovely, very desirable plant. Well done.

suggestions for small pants?
I'm not sure what your waist size has to do with anything  .

Seriously - I like Hemianthus micranthemoides for a small, dainty stem plant. It'll need pruning to keep at the desired height but is ideal for the smaller tank.

I look forward to seeing the set-up Sam.

Haha my chuckle after reading that will certainly have given away to the rest of the office that I’m not working! Cheers George! Guess that serves me right! (I surely can’t be the first person to have done this in a 'planted' forum!)

Will def try the HM, am gonna phone up a LFS and try and get some. Will also try the mini anubias, see what I can do re shading it. Think it’ll make a great centre piece on some bogwood.

Cheers

Sam

I have petite nana in my 10g. I have duckweed and larger anubias shading them. Duckweed is a good shading plant, but I find the root system to be quite annoying, and it grows like a weed. Salvinia minima is prettier IMO, but you have to be careful, they are not as tolerant to close light or extreme humidity like the duckweed is. My Salvinia fried in my 10g, while my Duckweek thrived. If the lighting is separated from the tank, then go with the Salvinia, for it is really a lovely plant. My anubias are attached to a piece of mopani driftwood. Some cryptocryne species stay small. I purchased cryptocryne lutea and a dwarf green wendtii, split the plants and have formed a little semi-lawn in the front of my 10g. My glosso also stays pretty small, about 3 inches. My 10g doesn't have quite as much light, only 2.8 WPG, so it doesn't carpet, but it is still a very pretty bushy stem plant that happens to be short.

If you don't mind pruning, you can train some stem plants to stay small. I can keep my rotalia at three inches if I wanted too. Hygro difformis, also can look stunning at a smaller height.

Hopes this helps a little.
