What do you get when you breed a sailfin molly with let's say, a lyretail or gold dust? Does it work? Do they turn out nice?

They will cross breed, but then again mollies are so inbred generally anyway that even if you breed 2 that you think are the same some strange babies can occur, i have white and black mollies and some of their babies have come out part orange, just goes to show how inbred they are. whether your combination would look good is anyone's guess. But good luck trying.

Cheers, Karl

Thanks. I literally cannot find any female sailfins around here so I had to get different kinds. Kind of a bummer that they will most likely turn out weird looking.. lol

You may get some fish that are the same color as the male or the female but it will be nice to put a sailfin on any color molly. If you have the green sailfins, they are closer to a pure strain than most so they should not pass any kind of wierd colors or patterns to the fry. Be aware that the new females that you have are likely already pregnant and will continue to produce fry from previous matings for as much as 6 months. What this means in practical terms is you won't really know what a cross with your male will look like for at least 6 months.

Well I bought 2 of the females really small/young and I've had them for about 3 months and none of them seemed pregnant. The larger gold dust female I bought more recently and is the only one to have babies so far but the others are now pregnant too. The sailfin male I have is like creamsicle colored. I wish I could find a nice green one.

O would expect the creamsicle with a gold dust female to give you creamy colored fry with or without the spotting on them. They can be a very nice looking fish when they have a sailfin.

What does color have to do with inbreeding? Color is simply shown by probability (i.e. your black and white mollies carry the orange gene....and they pass it on to their babies). Now if you saw many genetic disorders, then that may be a sign of inbreeding...

I think OldMan was referring to 'interbreeding' between different Molly colors/species..
