I have a 60L tank that is almost finished fishless cycling.

I was going to get 8 neon's for the mid level fish but I seems I should wait until 6 months before adding neons.

What mid level fish do you recommend?

The other fish will be:

3 guppies (male)
1 dwarf gourami
3 cherry shrimp

Thanks!

harlequins are a good choice

I do like those. The only thing is I want neon's eventually and don't have room for two sets of schooling fish.

Anything else that I can just have a couple of so the tank is not to boring and then I can add the 8-9 neons after 6 months?

harlequins are very good shoaling fish, and can be quite fun, i had some that used to swim round and up the side of my tank

There are lots of different species of tetras that might be a fun replacement for the neons/cards idea for you. I just never feel comfortable just throwing out names of tetras I know for fear one or more might not be right in some way. Sometimes when I see a list I can make comments... like serpae are really mean and lemons (and bleeding heart tetras too I sometimes think) are almost as mean, lol. A suggestion would be to go to the subforum for tetras here on TFF and work your way down through the list, with a second tab or browser window open at the same time where you just use google images to let you see different pics of the species and see what strikes you.

OK, I'm going to just list some names that come to mind but I don't know if they would be good or not. Glowlights, Head&TailLights, black neons, penguin tetra, pristella/x-rays, rosy and white tips (if you could find them.)

Most aquarists do not realize that this species gets big, attaining a maximum length of 24 inches. Therefore, it is important that you have a sizable aquarium (135 gallons or larger) if you hope to raise this fish to adulthood

Harlequin Rasboras do not get anywhere near that large, they are a fish somewhere around the 1.75 inch length.

There is a Harlqeuin Tusk Fish but that's a saltwater species. The poster was not referring to this.

2nd Harlequin Rasboras do not get very big. . .Before buying mine, I double checked size and they're suppose to get up to 2" in length. They are schooling fish, though, so they should be in a group. Mine usually stay about midrange, but go crazy and bounce up to the top of the water when there is food.
