after my tiger barbs laid their eggs i removed them and added 1/2 teaspoon of methylene blue to the 10 gallon tank...the recommended does was 1 teaspoon...my water is blue now...like really blue lol...is this bad? i mean i dont want to mess up the sponge filter that i have in there...it looks like ive got moonlighting in my tank now...i've never used this stuff before...oh and on a side note when i opened the bottle i got some in my eye...not fun to deal with...

any one who has used this please tell me if my water should be this blue? i could do a water change if i need to, but i would dump the water in the yard so i dont stain my bath tub lol...thanks

It's suppose to turn the water blue. It won't hurt anything. If you want you can remove it. Personally I stay away of meds that color the water. I hate them.

thanks, i dont mind it i just didnt think it would be so dark lol, im just trying to keep the eggs from getting fungus on em...thanks for the reply!

Methylene Blue is also used as a"stain" in biological samples that are going under the microscope. It helps to allow diferentiation to cell walls and makes microscopy a lot easier.

- Is your eye blue? :) ( i wouldnt be suprised if it was)

I've heard, (and seen) that it will stain everything and anything in your tank with a lovely blue tinge... just a word of warning.
I also seem to remember reading that it will kill off your filter bacteria, but don't take my word on that one.

I've used meth blue in the past and i got the fright of my life the first time i used it it does turn the water a really dark shade of blue but it should start to fade over the next day

The first time i used it i had live and fake plants and nothing had any stains on it but just watch if you get it on your hands/clothes and especially in your eye i would recommend rinsing it well with warm water . If you get any sort of irritation to go straight to your doctors

Also never had any problem with the filter once i've used it , tank never went into a cycle and the meth blue done the job is was made for ! lol

yea it does kill off all bacteria, if you add this to your tank you will need to re-cycle it, also it stains silicone blue too, so suckers, nets, tubes even the silicone on the tank all a lovely shade of blue. ive hatch cory eggs, using this, in a tub with just an air line, then move the yongsters to a cycled tank afterwards. If using to treat fish, do a fish bath, ie add your fish to a bucket with the dosage for a few mins, di

Thanks for the replies...yea my eye was all blue, it was trippy lol...after i rinsed it out for about 15 minutes it was fine...just burned for a bit...i can see the suction cup on my thermometer is blue already lol...fingers crossed that my sponge filter keeps its bacteria...if it gets messed up i can throw it in my 55 for a few days to build it back up a bit...i dont think the fry will produce so much waste that a daily water change wont take care of it...i also have an air stone in there with the filter so they should be fine...thanks again for the replies!!
