I just read an article in the October issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist. The article was about the monterey aquarium in california and its attempts to get a great white shark into captivity where they could study it. The article mentioned that 50 MILLION charks are killed each year commercially, as well as inadvertantly in fish nets. Thats a rediculously high numer. I always knew sharks were being killed but it was always in the back of my mind.

However, this article mentioned that it is important not to purchase products from companies that kill sharks while doing nothing to curb the number of deaths their company causes. Im all for it, but I have no idea which companies would comprise such a list. Can anyone tell me what companies they know of that specifically harm fish and sharks without attempting to reduce, or stop the destructive behavior?

The Monterey Aquarium had a white shark previously. They had to release it when it matured and started to stalk its tank mates. My DIL volunteered there and LOVED the place. There is a web cam where you can view some of their exhibits real-time. http://www.mbayaq.org/efc/cam_menu.asp You can choose "zoom" to full screen and although it's a bit blurry, it's kind of like having a live aquarium to watch on desktop during those especially stressful times at the office. If you have dial up, the effect is not the same.
