Will they "take out" my c. afra? This may sound like a dumb ?, but do fish make any distinction with the stripes....I'm guessing that they just see he is blue and black also and beat the poop out of them? What about 1 male in my tank with 4-5 female  ? They do look awesome, but I don't want any murders  . Would it be bad if I have 4-5 females only w/out males  ? They'd probably hybridize, huh?

Ive not any experience with those ... but if im right, they're not as aggressive as the Auratus or any other Melanochromis... but still aggressive enougth to take on other species. I think you'd be ok with a male and 3/4 females.. especially in a tank your size. But if you get a male, be prepared for he may take role as Boss.

I have a auratus in my tank which is meant to be up there with the most agressive Melanochromis Like Darrel said, I also have afra in my tank and they generally leave him alone, he did use to own the tank but has been driven out of his home ever since I moved the sand and decor around a bit. Ill have to get rid of them soon as they are hellbent on destroying eachother and not letting any of the other fish rest.......(Serves me right I was told this when I started :D)...But they dont really bother the afra...or the 1 Guppie xD

Dawn thinks it may be alright with these fish because of the SIZE of my tank. It's 5feet long by 1.5 feet deep by a pinch over 2 feet high....I may have to try them!

Hey there..

imreasonably new to malawi's , but have had some experience with johanni.

I have a 150 ltr 4ft tank with 16 fish

usual sorts , demasoni , yellow labs etc.

i had 2 of the dreaded johanni's and honestly wished i didnt bother , all they did was stress the other fish out , constantly chase everything that passed in front of them , for what seemeed like nothing other than a sport at times.

these really are agressive little sods, and should really be kept in a large tank ( 250 litre + )

this is just my experience , and others may have been more lucky , but for as long as i keep malawi's i will not have these fish again.

hope this helps some

:good:

how many males/females did you have? my tank is roughly 473 liters.

-edit--
from what I've seen, the males are blue and females are orange....my lfs only has males...I'd have to see if they can get females or order some from somewhere else.

2 and they were both blue

a 473 litre tank...WOW..very nice :good:

its totally up to you, but even in a tank that big, these fish will cause you trouble..its what they are all about

again, i can only speak from my experience, i have many diff types of malawi , and rest all seem A ok...but these....never again

research ALOT regarding these fish , and choose tank mates wisely, and you may be ok

I honestly believe , that although a particular the species on the whole are either midly or aggressive , fish themselvs do have their own nature, and you wil lfind some that are apparently KILLERS..can be quite chilled.

again..

its your tank, all i can say is RESEARCH.. :good:

Johanni should be absolutely fine in your tank kj23502 - they are only averagely aggressive by Mbuna standards and should be no problem in a large tank. Afra's are substantially different in appearance and size and i've kept males of both species toegther with little issue in several different setups. :good:
