Hello a couple days ago my albino cichlid got attacked and half his tail ripped off. I quarantined him in a 25 gallon. And he seemed to be getting stronger daily. Yesterday, on the word some forum users I added some melafix, and removed the carbon. This morning i woke up to my cichlid lying on the bottom, very weak, looking like hes gasping for air. =[

Is this at all normal? or is he perhaps succumbing to his wounds? He had a red line on his body just before the tail fin, which looks better today (it has a kind of greyish fuzzy "scab" on it.) and his tail fin is still half gone. So is the mela fix causing him to lie on the bottom gasping? or is it just a coincedence that hes doing that the next day?

I've used melafix with my male betta that had finrot and he never looked affected by the meds, except for his tail growing back. I don't know why he is lying on the bottom like that. How is the water? You might want to raise the temp a little for him.

when treating with melafix, it is usually better to aerate the tank a lot too increase oxygen levels.

add an airstone in there and as mentionned, increase the temp a little bit.

Never mind he died. Melafix seems to have made him worse to the point of death. weeeeeeeee. Guess im grabbin a new african today. =[

Sorry to hear that, this is certainly not a typical result of melafix - he must have been fairly bad off.

Keep in mind what I said about overstocking, or you may find this problem repeating itself. Good luck.

all the others get along great. But yeah the more the merrier to off set agression.

If it aint too many its not enough. Hmmmm isnt that how an alchoholic functions?

So now you have an empty tank? What are you going to stock it with?
since he said the fish was attacked and had its tail ripped off... i'm pretty confident betting a quarter that tank ain't empty. ;) unless he's taken carnivorous plants to a whole new level...

i'd leave things alone if everyone's getting along now. but that may just be me.

hehe Gonna go take a look at the lfs today. They get new stock today so I hope to get some otto. Definately grabbin an african. As for the empty tank Im not sure. I could make another cichlid tank...or I could transfer the gouramis to it and make a community tank of fish that would go with the gouramis. Any suggestions? =]

Well I think she previously had him in a mbuna tank with some other mbunas and they attacked him and she moved him to her other tank. I believe she was going to make it an albino tank but now that her albino cichlid died, I wanted to know what she was going to do with the other tank which I assume may be empty? Besides an algae eater maybe. :p

How big is the empty tank again?

I would go for a community with the gouramis, because you already have a cichlid tank. :p But the choice is up to you. I am going to the LFS in a few minutes to get some fish.

She's (meaning me ;)) a he but otherwise (as per usual) you are correct raechal ;)

Any fish u would suggest to go with the fancy dwarf gouramis for a non aggressive community? (empty tank is a 25 gallon) gouramis are currently in a 10 gallon.
My wife would like angel fish it is a tall tank so i believe it would accomodate what do ya think?

EDIT

O ya and whatcha gettin from the lfs ya self? ;)

Oh I'm sorry I didn't know you were a guy. :p So sorry for mixing it up. I am going to the LFS in about 10-20 minutes and am going to see if they have rams. I sure hope they do since my male blue ram is very lonely. Anyways I am not that experienced in angels so you may want to ask someone else. Sorry again. :dunno:

Hehe s'ok =] its the internet i could bne a 3 eyed fish for all u know ;P

ok ill let my 25 cycle a bit while i think about the angel situation.

still no suggestion as to what type of fish would make a good community with a pair of gouramis (fancy dwarf) in the 25?
I really like the look of the blue ram but since the last one i got (of two) was dead the next morning...im a lil leary. In the species' defence it was ragged when i rescued him from the lfs. =]
