I saw a post today that said when treating Bettas with melafix to use half the recommended dosage.

Is that right?

If anyone has a bottle of Bettafix to hand, what does it say to dose per Ltr/gallon?

So basically you add less Melafix per gallon than Bettafix.

So if its already saying to add less melafix than bettafix, by about 80% less, so why half it again?

Bettafix = 0.2% Melaleuca (tea tree)

Melafix = 1% Melaleuca

So that means Melafix is 5 times stronger :good:

Bettafix = 1 tsp per 2 US gallons

Melafix = 1 tsp per 10 US gallons

So that means you add melafix at a rate 5 times less than Bettafix

So, isn't the dosage already worked out for you? Why half the dose of Melafix?

Melafix is over priced and over rated. It an antiseptic and only good for cuts and wounds. No good for internal bacteria infections. Its an external bacteria med.

Agree that its an antiseptic used for keeping wounds and cuts clean, which in turn will help avoid further infections setting in. I dont think its over-priced though  cus it lasts ages.

But can anyone explain why some people say half the dose? I know someone has recently, but cant remember who?

How much did you pay bronzecat for melafix. As a bottle I bought cost be seven pounds fifty pence.
Some fish don't tolerate melafix to well so sometimes it best to try half dose first.

The last bottle i bought was around £9 for a 237ml bottle. That will last me around 6 months, so thats not too bad. If i'm happy with a product then why not use it? And there is nothing to compare it too, to evaluate whether it is over-priced.
Its like the recent tests i did with Seachem Stability, some people will say its rubbish, but i had good results.

Regarding the half dose thing, I'm looking at bettas so i still cannot understand why melafix should be halved. I'm just puzzled by it

Im currently using melafix after a fight leaving both my boys without tails! I agree it is quite expensive but if it works im willing to pay for it, it will last a good while as well.
Im not sure about the half dose, but i am only half dosing anyway to be on the safe side!

I'd never heard of half-dosing until now. I'm using Melafix on my boy who's been having trouble with his fins. He's in his hospital tank, with the dosing of melafix it says on the back of the bottle. I don't see any ill effects, he seems quite pleased! Even has a nice little bubble nest going. :)
