I posted as a complete newbie, a few days ago, asking a couple of questions, and I really appreciate your help
So today, Alfie came home! I was sooo excited, that I was up at 6:30am

Alfie, I believe, is of the Veil tail variety.. a bog standard fish shop Betta. But I think he's gorgeous, and fell in love with him when I first saw him, last week :D Is there a technical name for his colour, or is he just 'blue with red bits'?
Sorry about the not so great photos, but I'm reckoning they're better than none! :hyper:

I think hes great, thats the same colour of the first betta i got..

Dont know if there is a specific name for the colour though, maybe someone else with more experience can help ya.

:)

awww, nice one :good:

I don't believe he has a specific name. Just blue with red wash. It's usually an undesirable trait in bettas (for showing- VTs aren't show fish though, so no biggie!), unless it's very evenly distributed in a pattern of sorts on the fish. It can occur from puting a blue and red fish together to spawn, or even a blue with yellow, as the yellow represents the "non-red" gene, but both fish could have a different "non-red" gene and in their spawn it would show up as yellow. It's hard to tell unless you know the background of the fish though!

Ooh that's interesting to know, Constantine.. thanks :)

Don't let him hear you say he's has undesirable traits though.. he wont be a happy fishy ;)
His red bits were part of why I fell for him :D

Hah...it's only undesirable if you're showing him. VTs aren't a sanctioned strain to be showed, so it their coloration only really matters to the owners. :)

v.nice! quite similar to a vt i have just the red on mine is green:)

Well, this is his first morning at home, and he's still alive! :fun:

He seems to be eating well, and has had his breakfast
He also seems to like the little bubbles that the air filter makes, and is spending quite some time swishing around in those, rather than in the more still water. Have I got a freak Betta?! I didn't think they were supposed to like their water being disturbed

He also seems fascinated by the orange light on the heater, and goes straight to it, when it starts glowing :shifty:

Ohh, he's so preddy!

Dee :)

I think the current issue is totally betta dependent. I have my yellow pearl HM guy in a 5g tank with an Azoo filter. Even turned all the way down it has pretty strong flow. I was worried about it, but when I put him in the tank he immediately went to swimming through the current-- like it's some sort of challenge he has to conquer! Sometimes these little guys are just funny. I have another MG HM guy that was so picky about everything that he ate all his fins, so...it's just a trial and error sort of game sometimes. :)

I'm glad he's settling in well!

That's what Alfie's doing. I suppose it's like a treadmill for fishies.. maybe he's a bit of a fitness fanatic
