Greetings from Montreal, Canada.

During the holidays I mentioned the idea of starting an aquarium to my brother in law when they were over for lunch one day, and he talked me into it. I'm currently a little over 2 weeks into a fishless cycle using flakes, and things are progressing nicely (though nowhere near as fast as I'd like!).

So far I've dealt with a bacterial bloom, which doesn't seem unusual from my extensive googling and reading (since there's nothing else to do but wait). A 50% water change, gravel vac and rinsing the decorations and wood off cleared the water up nicely.

I'm dropping in a large pinch of flakes each day, and the ammonia seemed to cap out at about 1ppm. Without using actual ammonia, this seems to be about the best I can hope for. Each day for the last week, my ammonia tests have come back less and less green. Right now I'm definitely below 0.25 ppm ammonia, but not yet at 0. My nitrite is a bright purple, making it hard to read the test accurately, so I've been testing with a 50% and 25% cut of aquarium water with aged tap water and multiplying the result by 2 and 4 respectively. My best guess is they're between 4 and 5. After a 50% water change to ease up the bacteria bloom, my nitrates are still climbing, so I know things are cycling. There's a couple of plants in there, and a moss ball. Eventually I'll be throwing in some java moss and fern as well.

This is going to be a community planted shrimp tank. I'll probably end up getting a hang on breeding box to drop the pregnant shrimp in to help the survival rate, as they will be sharing the main tank with 6-12 cardinal tetras and another 6-12 Zebra Danios. Once the cycle is done, I'm planning on adding the shrimp, and then fish 6 at a time each week just to give the filter a chance to develop with the bioload and not throw things out of balance.

to the forum! I hope you enjoy it here.

Can't wait to see the tank, shrimp are really neat. I've only had the fortune of owning a bamboo shrimp so far though (and only been two weeks with that one).
I would suggest against the zebra danios as most would like to see them in a minimum of 3ft though others say 4ft tank. They're also sub tropical.

May I ask why you're not using ammonia? If you're having trouble finding it I believe THIS should be of use.

Short answer is, I couldn't find any! I gave up looking, but never checked Home Hardware. I'll have a look, thanks!

I figured that was why :p I hope they have it!

I missed your comment on the Zebras earlier.
3-4 feet in length I assume you mean. This is the first reference I've seen to such small fish needing such a large tank! I've been relying on the stats from liveaquaria.com when researching species and compatibility. Are they no good?

Yes in length. It is because of how incredibly active they are.
I would not rely upon a site that wants to sell you things for information, though LA isn't always wrong. I usually use seriouslyfish but that can be inaccurate sometimes too. :/

Pity, I really like the look of the Zebras. I might go rasbora instead. I don't know. But being a 20 gallon long, it's already 30 inches.

Awesome suggestion for the ammonia, I decided to check a little mom and pop hardware store down the road, and found myself exactly the bottle of ammonia mentioned in that thread!

Like I have mentioned the zebras are also sub tropical so getting the rasboras would be better on both accounts, IMO.

So glad you were able to find some! :D

Welcome to the forums. Very cool that you decided to dive in and do things correctly! Refreshing to see.

Honestly, you could do the zebras... really just not an ideal setup. Ninj is right.

More than 6 cardinal tetras is going to be the way to go. The more you have the cooler they look in the tank. I had 12 in a 55g and they were mesmerizing to watch.

Any idea what sort of shrimp you are going to stock?

My brother in law will be giving me some Red Cherry shrimp.
I've started a tank journal over in this thread.

Oh cool! I'll have to check out the tank journal.
