Mbuna Plec

Hi All,

I would like to add a Plec or two to my Mbuna tank. Seems the most common option is a bristle nose. Is it possible to add any other of the more 'fancy' ones eg Galaxy, Golden Nugget, Snowball etc? Would they be tolerant of the alkaline & hard water parameters?

i got gold nuggets dude. they been in since beginning and get along well with the 40+ i added after the plecs. i found they easily grew to 2foot in length after 12 months due to algae wafers and feedings of new life spectrum cichlid formulae 4 times a day that the cichlids didnt get to first.

anouther option for u if u got a decent cash flow is synodontis

Are you sure it's a Gold Nugget Plec as the maximum size for one is 14"?

they are very well to sometimes possibly too well fed with alot of algae wafers and newlife spectrum. so it maybe theyve been alowed to grow bigger due to my precise 4 times a day feeding etc im not sure but rest assured all food gets eaten in a tank of 40cichlids and a few silver dollars.

i know fore sure theyr 2ft long because theyre tail reaches just past the back glass whilst theyr sucking the front of the tank.

im currently in the process of upgrading to a 10ft tank for the garage.

sorry but no golden nugget will ever reach 2 foot and any plec no matter how well fed will not reach 2 foot in 12 mnths may well be a L001 gold spot but not a golden nugget lol

My main concern is that I would be adding a wc fish from the Amazon to the hard and high ph Malawi tank. Would a plec adapt quite easily? Wouldn't want to cause it too much distress.

That's the reason I won't put a Plec in my Malawi tank. Even though they can adapt and will tolerate the higher PH, it doesn't seem fair to do it IMO.

mine adapted fine as babies! but they were already in the tank so they adjusted with the water!
