Hi Guys,

Although I am new to this forum, and what a good forum it is!!, I have had tropical fish for a few years now.

I have a Silver Shark that I think is getting a bit to big for the tank as it jumps into the hood every now and then (especially when spooked) and has twice jumped out through the feeding hatches recently.

What I want to know is what is the maximum acceptanble size for a Silver Shark in a 120L tank?

The Shark is perfectly healthy and I have had it for approx. 6 years. It is now approx 6-7 inches long.

Many thanks for your help in advance!

The Shark can and will grow to arround 10 inches at least, the tank is way to small and should be at least double the size a 240L tank should be ok. the shark will continue to grow until it reaches to arround the size stated earlier, this may be slower as it is in a small tank. hope this helps

Thanks for the confirmation guys. As I can't house a bigger tank I guess the fish is going to have to find pastures new.

I'll put an add in the buy, sell and swap section.

Cheers

It's good that you're rehoming it. I just would like to say that I disagree with andywatson29. I believe silver sharks can grow up to 14 inches, and need tanks much bigger than 240 litres when full grown. They need to be in groups, and in a tank at least 6x2x2'. But, that's just my opinion.

Ill second that opinion and also like to say its great to get new members willing to accept advice even when its not exactly what you may like to hear :)

:hi:

Silver sharks.... always a fun little fish for someone shopping in the lfs and they see this cute little 2" fish. But yes, they will grow to 10" and can reach 14" in the right conditions. Plus, they are very skiddish fish that prefer to be in schools for security so you need atleast 6 of them to make them feel safe. So add it up... 6 x 10 to 14" means atleast a 125G (~500-600L) tank. And you might even want bigger seeing as how they are very active fish and because they are so skiddish will dart acros the tank, and if there is not enough room, they can run into a piece of decoration or the wall and seriously hurt themselves

Thanks again for all the advice.

I did have a pair of them but one died about 1 year ago. It has always been fine on its own, but obviously it has gotten a little to large for my tank now!

I have put an advert in the buy, sell swap section so if anyone is interested please let me know.

Cheers
