I have a Magnum HOT 250 on my 40 gallon tall show tank (8 juvenile dwarf variety cichlids/ 1 albino cat) as a supplement to an Emperor 280. The HOT has been running with a sponge pre-filter on the intake, the standard internal foam sleeve and Marineland's Black Diamond Blend in the media basket. The media is probably has or is about to reach the end of its useful life, been running 3 weeks and I'm thinking of replacing it soon but debating with myself about the media. The Emperor takes care of the chemical end (I use bioForever inserts and am happy with them) so I don't see a need for additional chemical in the HOT. Tank has been running for about 8 weeks and I've gotten through all the new tank challenges and the water quality is great and crystal clear. I kind of want to go the low maintenance route with the HOT. Thinking I'll go with SeaChem Matrix in the HOT media basket. I haven't pulled the HOT apart and checked but I think I should be able to get about half of one of the 1 liter jars of Matrix in the basket which supposedly is good enough for up to 50 gallons. Is this a good or bad choice for the HOT?
