hi all
here is the problem
I have a 100ml of 30% solution A I need 1 litre of a 10% solution C
(the 30% solution can not be made into a 100% solution)
I will be adding distilled B (de-ionised) water to the 30% solution

how much B to how much A to achieve C
 
???? But surely 200 ml of RO water plus 100ml of solution makes 300ml?
Not a litre as required?
If no one has it by the time she's awake my GF will know for certain....

If you only have 100ml of 30% then to get 1 litre of anything then you will need to add 900ml to get 1 litre therefore you don't have enough 30% to make the mix.

You would need 333ml of 30% solution and mix with 666ml of DI water to get 1 litre of 10% solutions and as you only have 100ml you can only make 300ml total by adding 200ml DI water to it.

No that is wrong

If 100ml of solution 30% of a substance then that makes 30ml

added to 200ml of DI =

300ml soplution which still contains the original 30ml of substance whic = 10%

Add 200ml water to your 100ml 30% solution will make 300ml new solution at 10% concentration

100ml solution A + 200ml B = 300ml solution C

so you are still short of 700ml of solution C

Based on that you can't, the dilution up to 1 litre will be less than 30% because of your starting volume.

Simple divide the initial %age by the required %age then multiply the initial volume of which it is a percentage by the result. i.e. (30/10)*250 = 750ml

Well 250ml will make 750ml and 100ml will make 300ml - add the two thats 1050ml - tad over a litre will that do ?

PS to prove this theorem - 30% of 250 = 75, 10% of 750 = 75
 
Ok. Your final solution is to be 1 litre with 10% saturation.

Therefore you need 100ml of saturation liquid (whatever that may be).

Your basic solution is 30% saturation, so 100ml / 30 x 100 = 333.33ml of basic solution required. This gives 100ml of saturation as required.

Top this up with 666.67ml of water (or whatever your dilutant is) and you have 1 litre with a 10% saturation.

Summary

333.33ml basic solution
666.67ml dilutant

333 ml of the 30%, add RO water to make 1 liter (667 ml of RO water).
