My parents own a pet shop and got a batch of very small baby red caps. I bought one and put it in my tank, which is now working with 3 other fish. The fish have been fine until the red cap died, then all my other fish have died all but one which is very ill and I imagine when I get home today will find it dead, I called my parents up and they had split the fish among 3 tanks with black moors in the store and every fish in those tanks has died, within 48 hours of introduction the tanks have all been wiped out.

Now my tank set up has been called into question before my parents have never seen anything like this, not this quick anyway literally 48 hours after putting the fish in everything was killed and I bought my fish the same day, although all but one is dead it isn't much after the 48 hours.

What do they have and how am I supposed to prevent this, the fish were all healthy.

This is why you quarantine.

The fish will have brought a disease in with them from where they were imported which has infected all the other fish they have come in contact with.

Do your parents not quarantine any of their fish or was it just this time?

It was just this time however the black moors came from the same supplier that morning and the red caps in the afternoon so they weren't put in with any of the fish already in the store however they seemed fine none of them unwell and I've never seen anything kill fish so quick, it had spread to my fish and killed them within 48 hours, any treatment I could have given would have been useless.

Actually another point is my tank, I don't know what this is so what is best to do for this, complete drain and deep clean of everything including the filter then re-cycle?

I wasnt saying giove treatments or whatever,. im saying quarantine at the shop and when you bring them home.

I dont know about the tank, id say just give it a good clean should be enough, maybe treat with a wide spectrum treatment whilst theres no fish in to rid the tank of any left over parasites.
