Maroon Clownfish

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As my empty tank cycles I am waiting patiently to add fish. Trying to do research on behaviors of potential candidates. I absolutely love Clownfish and Lionfish and have had lots of varying opinions about their compatability. Large Maroon Clown will bully small Lions, Lions will eat anything they can fit in their mouths (like smaller clowns). Hope to understock my tank w 3, at most 4 fish (90 Gallon, w LR, fish only). Can you tell me about the temperment, behavior of the following fish?

1. Maroon Clownfish (Single)

2. Volitan (or Zebra) Lionfish.

3. Yellow (or Achilles) Tang.

4. Mandarinfish (I assume he's not compatable w 1 or 2).

I'm sure the experts will be along soon but I would have thought it would be difficult to keep a lionfish and clowns in the same tank. The lionfish will eventually grow large enough to fit your clown (s) in it's mouth! I've seen some very large lionfish (in the wild at least) and clows don't get that big.

As i said, i'm sure the experts will be able to say if I'm right or wrong though!

Maroon clowns grow to about 5-6" so Jim said when large enough the potential for the lion fish (the volitan potentially reaches 12") to feed on the clown is certainly there. The mandarins also are at threat. How big is the tank; ah 90 gallons sorry just spotted that. Is that UK or US gallons and what are the dimensions? With that kind of room you could keep a decent number of fish if it is fish only. Is the lion a must? Have you thought of maybe a another lion fish species; maybe a fuzzy dwarf lion fish? I am just saying because with that sized tank there are not many fish around you could not house. Yellow tangs will love it in a tank that size and there is a whole selection of angelfish, butterfly fish, tangs (maybe a powder blue).

Let us know what you are thinking and we can guide from there

Regards

I hear the smaller Volitans (Dwarfs) are difficult to keep. I just bought a pretty big Maroon Clown. A lion would be a curious addition to a community tank. Think 3 or 4 fish seems to be very underpopulated. Also a newbie, so guess the experts will have more to say.

achilles tang is one of my fave fish, They are prone to white spot and itch. Their environment needs to be ultra stable, they have quite a poor survival rate in captivity as they dont deal with stress well. 90gallons is probably on the small side tbh.

1. Maroon Clownfish (Single)
Maroon's are hellions from almost everything I've read. They even go as far as re-arranging their environment....yes moving rocks. I really want one, but won't get one b/c i don't want to have to try to get it out of the tank after it ticks me off a few times.

2. Volitan (or Zebra) Lionfish.
Go w/the dwarf.

" Dwarf Lionfish species are really only different from their larger, related (same subfamily Pteroinae) kin... by size mainly, and a propensity to "sit on the bottom" more. The smaller lionfish species require the same good sized, well filtered and aerated systems as the bigger ones... Can be similarly trained to non-live foods and killed by the same inappropriate live freshwater ones, and are susceptible to the same pathogens and treatments for the same."

3. Yellow (or Achilles) Tang.

Yellow tang is a yes.
Achilles is a heck no. They are a very sensitive fish and will get much to big for that tank. They need lots of stable water around them and will often die suddenly w/an unknown reason/cause.

4. Mandarinfish (I assume he's not compatable w 1 or 2).
I wouldn't.

Yeah I too will voice caution on the maroon clownfish. They're really aggressive and hyper territorial. If you've got a really big tank (think 6' length minimum) then go ahead, otherwise beware

Thanks. So the Maroon is difficult. Thought maybe it's aggression and propensity to be larger than other Clowns would make it a better fit for Lionfish. Everyone says the Achilles Tang is a difficult fish to keep. Beautiful though. Are Tangs hypersensitive to Ich? Enough to make a beginner want to avoid them? What about marine Bettas (Comet fish). Is that compatable with a lion OR a Clownfish? Are Lionfish compatable w Reef systems? Other than buying a Halide light, if I want to upgrade to a Reef tank in the future what else would I have to add (90 Gallon Tank (48 X 24.5 X 28.5) Have a 110 Gallon Sump MegaFlow 3, pump that cycles at 540 G/hr w two powerheads that add another 700 G/hr, two 250 Watt Heaters, 90 lbs of cured Liverock, a Protein Skimmer rated for 125 gallon tank, Chempure filter pouches in my MegaFlow; I understand the salinity would need to be increased and Fish compatability would be an issue).

IMO achilles Tangs are harder to find than keep

Marine bettas would be compatible with lions or clowns and all of the above are coral safe. The betta and lion would not be shrimp safe though, they'd have a nice meal...

I believe I've noticed them on Diver's Den  I look everytime they send out an email w/updates though. I could be getting my wires crossed  Anyhow, I think they'd be a better prospect coming from DD and already established/feeding.

Oh you can find them on the divers den KJ, but did you also look at the price tag. Perhaps I should have rephrased that they're harder to find and purchase in an arangement that leaves you with two kidneys and your first born son... ;)
