I juts bought one of these yesturday for my 55 gallon and it works great I have one question however. The filters it comes with also the only ones you can buy have carbon in the back of them and the way its set up you can't remove the carbon. My question is in the back of the filters theres small holes would I be able to take a knife or a pair of scissors and make a big hole to get the carbon out. Its the only way I can think of to get the carbon out seeing how they don't sell filters wothout carbon, or atleast from what I have seen. Thnaks for your replies! :good:

I don't use carbon so what I do is tear the filter off and throw away the filter media and carbon then put filter floss on it with rubberbands.

It should have also come with 2 grey baskets for other media. At least all the ones I've bought have. I put filter floss in there also.

Wouldn't it be better though to use the filters they look like they would catch things better then just the filter floss. Also wouldn't just cutting a whole in the back to get all the carbon out also be easier. Mine also came with the baskets I took the bio-max out of my Aqua Clear which it relpaced and put it in the baskets for now.

It's personal preference. You can choose to use whichever you like and what you think works best. There's really no right or worng answer to it.

The reason I don't just cut a hole and leave the rest is because IME, that filter is cheap and gets clogged up and slimy a lot quicker than filter floss so I just get rid of it altogether.
