Marina/hagen Dorado Lcd Thermometer

i want to buy the same thermometer for my 20 gallon as my 10 gallon one, but only petland has it and it's all dusty and has tape on it.

should i buy it anyway? how old can such a thermometer be until it no longer gives valid readings?

IMO those thermometers aren't very accurate as they stick on the outside of the tank and can be affected by the rooms temperature. I prefer the glass ones the stick on the inside, or the "electronic" kind that run on batteries and have a probe that goes in the tank.

I have to agree. In my opinion too, I found the stick on strip thermometers to be difficult to read and not all that accurate. I lost a lot of fish once when a faulty tank heater stuck on and I couldn't tell it as the temperature got higher than the stick on thermometer's limit and before I knew what was going on several of the fish were killed by the 90+ temperature. I only buy the LCD types now that have a probe in the tank and a wire that goes to a little digital readout that is outside the tank - battery powered. At only $10 at a Petco near me it's a deal, the temperature in shown in numbers rather than hard to see colors, and I trust it.

Yup, I have the LCD's on all but my mbuna tank, for some reason they decided the probe was an enemy and would attack it all the time, they don't seem to mind the floating one though, just eat the alage off of it, go figure.
