I picked up a male Fighter on Saturday to go in my 3' community tank with 8 Corys and 2 Chocolate Doras.

I have no territorial issues or any schoolyard scraps going on, quite the opposite.

Is it normal for a Siamese Fighter to nap for half of the day in the middle of a clump of Camboba? He seems to spend most of his time chilling out.

When I first put him in the tank, he spent a couple of hours patrolling the perimeter and checking out the neighbours. Since then he has just been in a constant chill out state. He did flare up at his reflection a couple of times - an awesome sight, but apart from that he is very placid. He doesn't even mind being barged out of the way by the mad-as-a-box-of-frogs Albino Corys.

He seems fine enough, appears to be eating normally.

I did a 40% water change an hour or so before he went in due to a sudden build up of algae (my Bismark was covered over night by the dreaded brown stuff and the glass was coated so thick I couldn't see in!) Last time I give them any algae pellets.

I've just tested the water - Ammonia and Nitrite are 0, Nitrate 20. PH is 7.4.

I upped the temperature from 24 degrees to 25.5 degrees yesterday morning so he would feel a little more comfortable and it seemed to liven him up for a while.

So, is there anything I need to do or is this normal?

Others might pick up on things but bettas are full of personality yours might simply be 'laid back' it is very variable from betta to betta. Just make sure your filter if you have one is low flow and if you cant lower the flow block it with a plastic deflecter or use tights to cover the end of your inflow. Bettas cant swim against high flow and will often get tired and lie in plants etc if the flow is too high for them

Nice one, cheers :good:

Will drop the flow rate now.

Anyway, here's a pic of Brinn (named after Yul Brinner who was King of Siam in The King And I)

Im sure hes just a chilled fella, but bettas do like things to be just a tad warmer, I found mine quite lethargic at those temps, trouble is the corys wont appreciate it any higher, try to get it to 26/27 and see if that makes a differnce, if it doesnt then he probably just happy as he is and turn it back a bit. If he perks up, then you know its the temp and you will have to find a compromise for all the fish.
