my largest male rosy barb was fine until yesterday morning, when i turned on the tank lights and saw him lying on his side, breathing rapidly. he seemed just as active though, struggling with his fins to get upright.

i placed him in a breeder net and now he's breathing more slowly and not moving otherwise.

any idea on the cause and what i can do?

ammonia/nitrite 0, pH 6.7, temp 77F, all other fish are fine

Is he finding it hard to get off the bottom and top of the tank.
Does he look pale or darker in colour.
Any excess mucas on his gills or body.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
How old is he.
Does he look bloated or thin.
Any red sores or red streaking on his body or fins.

he is just lying there on his side, breathing normally. he is 2 years old. no to the other questions.

So his breathing returned back to normal
Laying to oneside can be a sign of a bacterial infection.
