Hi, I have a 29gal aquarium with two female platys, a male platy, four tetras and a suckermouth.

Today I found one of the tetras dead (there used to be five). It looked like a small part of its underside had been chewed out or something.

Could it have been the male platy? because I had seen him nipping at one tetra earlier.

thanks

Seems odd - the fish have plenty of space in a 29 gallon. I have a couple platys and 9 neons in a 29 gallon for a few months, and the platys seem to leave the neons alone. Maybe it was eaten up a bit after it died?

Do the neons have any areas or obsticles to hide around near the bottom of the tank - I know they like that.

I suppose it's possible the platy did it, I just havn't had that problem yet.

How long have you had the tank set up, what are you water stats (ie ammonia, nitrate, nitrite), do you test you water?

Telling us some more information may help us establish what caused the tetra to die, even if you did see the platy picking on it, and its more than likey that the fish was eaten or taken a chunk out of after it died.

edit - also what kind of tetras do you have? have you noticed them looking different than usual lately, change of color mayb and acting differently?

I only test for pH and ammonia- pH is 7.2-7.4, and ammonia is 0.
The tank fairly new, maybe a couple of months old.
I think it was a diamond tetra...at least it looked like a diamond tetra, but I'm not sure.

yeah, there are plenty of hiding spaces.

you should really have tests for nitrite and nitrate as these can also tell you if somthing is up with your tank.

As for your tank only being a few months old most tetras need a mature tank to thrive.

Apart from this i cant say much more mayb someone else can...

the other tetras seem to be doing just fine, but oh well. I'll be going to the pet store today and I'll see if I can get a nitrite or nitrate test kit.

thanks again
