Hi all my newly rehoused male has started resting on his side both on the top of waterline and on the bottom? He blows the odd bubble (and pops them fairly fast) and he is also actively swimming about but seems ti be resting a lot in this beculiour manner he is the one who had dmg ed his tail wich is growing back now slowly. Any ideas on to why his behaviour and should I be concerned?

what do you feed him and how often? does it look like he has trouble with his balance? If so Id treat for swimbladder. Bottom laying isnt abnormal per say, but being horizontal at the surface is not normal. The bubbles could be gas from his swimbladder.
i would resist feeding for a day or two in case he is constipated. Hopefully will help the issue. If not, and still side resting at the surface may want to consider dips in epsom salt.
let us know how he gets on over the next few days.
cheers

yeah, check water levels, make sure you're not feeding him too much... but yeah. My guy is probably just mostly lazy... or just old so lazy... he lies around most of the time, will swim over to one side of the 5 gallon tank, rest there, swim over to another side, rest there, etc. He's happy, he's been making bubble nests like crazy (actual nests now, not just bubbles), but yeah. He's eating, and healthy otherwise... just... lazy. -_-

he gets fed 1 time a day and a little amount he has no bloating at all water levels are ok and temp is around 28

Whoa... he really is majorly on his side... and he's not laying on top of anything... that doesn't seem like just laziness... but yeah. I'll let someone else who knows more than me about bettas.

thanks he has been trying to get ontop of his floating cup also, i put it in so he could hid from the flow and have some cover from the lights if he wanted also he does this on the bottom of the tank i thought he was dead but when i put the net in he swims off and watching him he is swimming to the top for air every so often then he swims back down or swims around then floats some :S

i put FSH (my male betta)back into his breading jail inside the comunity tank and instantly he looks happy so i taken my water samples to my friends (i did a huge 75% water change yesterday on his tank with water from my main tank) and 4 days ago they were all ok but tonight i found i had a rather HUGE nitrite spike i cant even describe the amount it spiked its simply off the charts way off if he was not a labrynth he was dead so i tested the main tank and its all ok :S im at a miss to why its spiked so high but FSH now seems happy in his breeder and i will not put him into his tank untill its been changed and settled (tested) during his time in his tank his tail has had more damage so i hope he settles down a bit better now poor fellow

how many gallons is the tank in the pic? the water looks a little on the unclear side, how often do you do water changes, and how much? Cant wait till hes better!!!

its a small 1ft by 8inch tank the water is changed daily 25% atm so his fins keep clean (he had some fin dmg from his escapades)i think the cloudy look is from the focus as its very clear. he seems a lot better this am in his breeder he swam around as soon as i came in room ill keep you all posted :D and ty for the well wish's
