My male black molly has been looking poor for the last week. He is very thin. It almost looks like his spine is sticking up because he is so thin. He still is eating, but not quite as vigorously as he used to.

Here's a picture of him:

Tank info:

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 10
pH: 7.8

Tankmates: 8 bloodfin tetras, 4 albino corys, 3 redwag platies, 1 clown plec

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Maybe there's a female Molly taking all his money. I'm sorry. I had to say that.

Seriously though, he might have some kind of gill infection. Does he hang out on the top and seem to try to breathe air with his mouth?

Is it just the way he looks in the picture, or does he always appear to have a hunched back? If he always looks that way and it isn't just the angle the picture is shot at, he coul have fish tuberculosis.

I don't think he has a hunched back. That is his fin on his back that looks hunched. He is very thin though. That picture actually makes him look a little better than he really looks.

He's the only molly in that tank. The female is in our tank downstairs.

He's swimming all over the tank, but he does hang out a lot near the top. His body is so thin it actually seems to curve in behind his head, especially right in front of his fin on his back (can't remember what that fin is called...too early in the morning). He reminds me of some poor starving kid from a 3rd world country.

poor fishy,
how old is he?
how is he today?
if he were mine and he stoped eating, looking like he does i would prob put him to sleep. :/

Oh, poor little thing. What does it look like when he goes to the toilet? I was thinking of either bacterial infection or parasites, both can cause white stringy poo.

I'm not sure of his age, but I got him back in August. He looks like his an adult and not a juvie. He still looks the same today. He's looked like that since the beginning of the month, but it's getting progressively worse.

His poo looks pretty normal to me. I don't catch him going very often though

You are dealing with fish tb to internal parasites.
Check the anus to see if it's enlarged or red and inflamed.
To be hoenst he looks bad and he's not going to make it, I think I would end his suffering.

If you're not keeping him in salt, I would try that. Perhaps get a small hopsital tank, and give him brackish water, since your other fish will not appreciate the salt. It probably is something more serious, but it's worth a try.

Best of luck. :)

Unfortunately right now I can not afford to buy a hospital tank or even the supplies to make one (unless I can do it without a filter)

I had a friend give me something called Binox to treat him with. Do you think that will help at all? I moved him out of the larger tank upstairs into the tank downstairs (10g that is easier to deal with) that has the other mollies in it.

Do you think it is worth treating him, or should I just euthanize him and put him out of his misery?
