I'm thinking about getting some fancy guppies to put in my 10g tank (which is currently cycling). What is a good male/female ratio for fancy guppies?

1 male to 3 or more females, I think works best. Good for 2 reasons, means ya have a better idea of any fry color you may have. (though the chances he is acherly the father of them is very very low.)

and also means your females are evenly harrased. :/

:fun: i have a ratio now of 2 males and 3 females, want to get more but waiting for guppy fry and molly fry to grow, my lfs (specialty fish only) will buy all my fry when the are 3/4". All y gups are fancy.

Well 1 male to 3 female is the best do too harassment upon other things ..... but alot of times ppl say you can get alot more males so the harassment to other males is spread out but you don't have the room

I was told that you should have one male for every two females.
;)

Ah, fish don't know how lucky they are (sigh).
:D

I have had a 1:2 ratio sometimes this work but dad really gets excited wen mom if going into labor .. this isn't a good thing he could literally harass her to death !!! keep this in mind it's terrible too lose a fish

I'm not planning on breeding... yet. I was thinking of getting some females first and then putting one male in when I have a fry tank set up. I think I will get 3-4 females first, feed them well, make sure they are healthy, and then when I'm sure they are strong enough to survive labor I'll buy a male fancy guppy. Thanx for all the advice!

A lot of times the females come pre-hit with enough stored sperm for 3 or more births.

Hmmmm... I didn't even think of that. I have a breeding net that I'm using in my 12g to keep the baby mollies in... should I use that (in case of a pregnancy) or should I just put in a lot of java moss and hope that some survive? I don't have enough money right now to buy another tank. (I blew most of it on the marine tank.... spoiled rotten fish. :D )

I wanted to save every fry when I first got guppies. Now, I let 'em drop wherever they fall. If they're fast enough and smart enough, they'll hide and survive. I think the java moss is a great idea...there will be spots to hide and infusoria for fry to eat.

Well females can store sperm for 3 or 4 batches but alot of times they are very young and already seperated for this very reason I have read that females who regularlygive birth don't do this b/c they don't feel the need to

If you DO get a prego female and aren't prepared don't try to save them just let nature take it's course for that time and you may get a few survivors and hten you will be repared the next time
