Male Betta

Ok great thank you I will go pick up the liquid test kit today n do a full water change

Just wanted to let you know how things are going :) I'm maintaining an ammonia level of less than
.10 which is great how long before I can start adding more fish

So my new 30 gallon tank has an ammonia level of 9.8 while the small tank has a level of 2.7 . Would it be better for my fish to stay in the small tank for now or to go ahead n move them to their new home

Hiya, how are you testing? The reason I ask is that i can't quite believe that 9.8 ammonia reading.

Did you put the fish in the big tank? If not, then it's impossible to get 9.8ppm ammonia. If you did, then I still struggle to see how even an unfiltered 120l tank can get 9.8ppm ammonia from only 2 platies and a betta. Something just doesn't sit right.

Can you tell me how you set up the big tank, and how you're testing?

I think the issue here could be confusion between litres and gallons. The original tank was 1.5 Gal, then i see it was being discussed as a 10, and then a "30gal" tank was purchased? Do we mean 30 LITRES, here. That would make sense with the readings...

That is good progress, nice one. You can consider your filter cycled when you have been able to go a week with both ammonia and nitrite at 0ppm, without having to change water. I would strongly suggest waiting until then before adding more fish - more fish = more ammonia, which at the present time, your filter can't cope with. Once you've had that week of Double Zeros, you can add fish, a few at a time, remembering that you will need to test (and possibly change water if necessary) as your bacteria colonies grow to cope with the additional ammonia.

Hi Mowbz, the OP already clarified that the readings were 0.98 and 0.27. I made the assumption from her login of "Betta Mom", that she's American, and I don't think they use litres there particularly, everything's still gallons.

Thank you for all the help I have gotten on here it has really help I'm sure I will have more questions soon :)
