A full description of the fishes symptoms: He's a male betta brought home from the pet store a week ago, he was healthy, now his fins are very clamped and he seems to have difficulty simming. To me it looks like his swimming troubles are due to how clamped his fins are, but I may be wrong. He's currently floating at the surface, but doesn't appear bloated. I haven't been able to get him to eat much at all since I brought him home, and he's currently refusing food.

How often you do water changes and how much: He's in a 6 gallon filtered tank with cloned media from a mature tank, as I've only had him a week today was my first water change, I did a 90% change due to his poor condition

Any chemicals and treatments you add to the water: just water conditioner, low likelyhood of exposure to chemicals

What tank mates are in the tank: none

Tank size: 6 gallons

Hi - clamped fins are usually a sign of a bacterial infection and can be treated in most cases with an anti-bacterial product such as Myxazin. I've never had to treat a sick Betta, apart from a little Melafix to heal a torn tail/fins - so you might be best to post your query on the Betta forum as they should be abe to advise specifically a treatment that works well for Bettas.

Could be that he got overly stressed and has developed this illness. If you treat him asap you might be able to save him.

Good luck - Athena

What your tap nitrate reading as its quite rare to be 0.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing against objects in the tank.
What his breathing like.
Clamped fish are a sign of stress and desease so there something wrong.
