I have a large 200l+ tank, with about 15 large plants and lots of places to hide in, with a male which never flares, what do you think of me getting a female?

Also In the Tank

10Corys
20 ish Neons
4 Platys
6zebra Danios
they all live happily together,

This Betta never flares even with mirrors and what not.

no females, he will shred her, harrass her and kill her

it doesnt matter if he flares or not, he may be passive but i doubt he would be with a female

No don't do it they should not be allowed to live together in this way as they will be aggressive to one another, even if the male seems passive or they get along fine to begin with it's a big risk to take, bettas are ticking time bombs!

It just isn't worth the risk in my opinion. It only takes that 8 hours you're asleep... or the time you're at work/school/uni or that half an hour you're watching TV...

i had 3 females and a male in a community tank once (was told by the LFS that sold them to me this could be done), and he killed all three within 3 days

i think it depends on the fish, my best friend had 3 females and one male in a tank together with no problems

Tetras are a big risk IMO, they are fin nippers for starters. Been the're, done that, had too take the betta out, got the T-shirt now.

Male and female together. Mmmmm big risk, maybe ok if they have the intention to spawn, but after that I would say definatly No.

I would have the divider to hand and possibly sleep with it, just incase.

Yeah! I agree with StrontiumDog! :good: go for it; float her in a cup and then maybe a clear net for a while; breedig traps work really well also; just, don't get to attached to her so if anything goes horribly wrong you won't be devastated, and, good luck! :good:

200l is a fairly amount. youd have to really plant it up (like a jungle) and have loads of hidey holes to even consider it. i mean always have a back up plan, but thats a nice space. it HAS to be possible in some set up and as far as ive seen with this query, thats got the most potential. but HEAVILY heavily planted. with double-sided caves for escape (so the fish cant get cornered. and cant be an agressive boy/girl.
cheers

I am going to say don't try it, I just release my female tonight in with my crowntail, yes my very pretty female (Dragon line) and at first was okay he flared did the dance for mating. She didnt' really want to mate and all of a sudden boom he chased her around the tank and was attacking like huge, with the net in hand took her out and put her back into the jar and wow the damage was already done! 2 Complete tears in the lower fin, and I am not happy at all. Trust me I can medicate it to fix it up but if i wasn't as quick as I was she would have died!

You are risking death of the female here proceed with caution

the tank already has about 10plants in it, and im soon getting a large tree stump to put in,.

you would need a lot more cover than that...LOADS of plants. at least 70% of the substrate before id even consider trying it. and even then, things could/probably will go wrong.
just saying.
cheers

10 types of plants. most of the area is covered, though

oh...types is different than just saying 10 plants. sorry for the confusion.
do you have a pic of the set up as it is now?
cheers
