Hi,
Got a new male yesterday - have put him in a small container within the main tank. One of the females is constantly circling him and flaring at him - he is doing the same. I let him out and put her in - but he didn't bother circling her - he swam away. Is this normal? Don't want to let him out, if they are going to fight......

Cheers

Male and female bettas are not to be placed together under any circumstances other than breeding; they will often fight until both are severely wounded, if not dead. Your male needs to be housed singly in his own tank of a min. of 1 gallon, though larger is strongly preferable.

I think it is a short finned male - didn't realise this as I bought 3 females from the shop around 3 months ago. I had just presumed that they would have given me 3 females, they were small at the time, so maybe it was difficult to tell.

Cheers

Females and males will fight. Males and males will fight.

The only bettas that can go together are females. Don't put males with females and don't put males with males.

Females can be more aggressive and even better fighters than some males. And remember, if you're putting females together, you need at least 4, perferably 6 or more, in a heavily planted tank.
