Are these the guys that come on the plants.. and happen to spawn like crazy..

Anyone have any pictures?

Also do these guys eat algae...? if so i will stop picking them out of my tank.

These guys are very good algea eaters plus they areate the sand to avoid toxic fumes from forming in it. I recommend having some, but sometimes you will have to take some out to keep the population under control. I personally take about 30 of them every month or so to keep the population neutral. heres a pic of the snails;

ok I don't think thats them.. these guys have a more rounded shell. They come off the plants, the LFS tell you before you buy plants that there is a possibility of snails. hmmm i need to get pic up to get a better id

Malayan livebearers don't lay eggs, so if you have snail spawn on the plants (looks like small blobs of jelly) then you have at least one other kind of snail.

The small, somewhat rounded, semi-transparent snails of the genus Physella seem to be the most common unwanted aquarium snails. There's a picture of one here. A few won't do any harm, but it is probably just as well to remove the eggs when you see them, because they will eat plants.

Cheers,

Neale

No problem. Assuming the fry are mobile, the snails will actually be very useful, eating unwanted food and preventing decay. I'm a fan of snails. They get a bad press, but if you pick the right species and use them in the right way, they're fun and easy to keep.

Cheers,

Neale

OOO thanks Neale you ID'ed my snail in my fry tank :D

Yeah the fry are moblie and doing well, the actual reason i put the snails in there is I didn't want them in my planted tank so thought they eat debris in the fry tank.

:good:

if you have too many, you can also squish them aganst the glass and the fish will get a fresh snail treat. pretty much all the fish love it!

the shell stays on the bottom until you gravel vac

if the fish is big enough he'll just swallow the whole thing

that looks like them monks...

I only see them every few days and when i do I pick them out of the tank. Is there any way to permenatley remove them?

Also do u suggest trumpet snails for algae removal?

trumpet snails eat algea but they breed like crazy. One day you see one, in a month you'll have a hundred!

Once you have snails, it's very hars to get rid of them unless you get a snail-eating fish but I don't know of any community fish that eat trumpet snails cause their shells are so hard!

I tried to boil everything in my tank except the fish and the filter media. Got rid of pretty much everything but I guess some snails were hiding in the filter media and a month later I had lots, right now the tank is infested. At least they hide in the sand so I never really see them during daytime.

Snails are difficult to remove once they're in the aquarium. You can buy snail traps, but they seem to be only somewhat effective. The best way to control snails is by limiting what they have to eat. In a tank with little algae and no uneaten fish food, snail populations grow slowly, if at all. Where people have plagues of snails, they also have bad aquarium management, because all the snails do is eat the excess food given to the fish.

Malayan livebearing snails are moderately useful for eating algae, but like all algae eaters, do not solve the actual problem. For a permanent fix, install some fast growing plants. Doesn't really matter what you use, and floating plants like hornwort are just as good as rooted species like Vallisneria.

In the big picture though, unless you have a plague of snails and they are eating your aquarium plants, forget about them. They're mostly harmless.

Cheers,

Neale
