After my dissapointing go at shrimps I have been looking at these snails. I just wondered how many of you have them and what you thought of them.

I know that they are really good for algea but I have also heard if you get too many they can disturb your plants roots.

Has anyone experienced any problems with them.

Also anyone fanny sending me some :D Very rude of me I know but hey you don't know unless you ask :/

Hi
I think the snails are excellent for algae and for plated tanks. They airate the substrat so the plants can spread there roots.I could send you 5 but they would be £1.50.
Thanks
Mat

i get them free from my lfs
they are the gods of algea control

Are there any kinds of algae that they don't eat? Cause I would like to get some if they are really algae gods.

I'm in the us..couldn't get it from you. It would've been nice though, but don't pet stores give them for free?

Anyone else with really well planted tanks have them.

I don't want to get a whole load and then find they start damaging my plants.

my tank is quite heavily planted a 12 gallon with 2 large amazon swords, an onion bulb and some other plants growing from the gravel. and i find that the MTS don't disturb the plants at all, actually i feel thay have helped the plants as plants have never thrived in this tank before. Though sometimes my tank looks like its over run by snails (they climb on the glass and float on the surface) but its just a matter of sticking a net in and taking a load out. And in conjunction with my shrimp and bristlenose i haven't suffered from any algae in the past year

I have MTS in my 33G. They are great for eating rotting plant matter, left over food and some forms of algae. They spend most of the daytime buried in the substrate sifting thorugh detritus and the action of them moving about can help control too much anaerobic build-up. I find them very useful.

I wouldn't rely on them as the sole form of algae control though. The only long term method for an algae free planted tank is to have plenty of plant growth brought about by creating an ideal balance of light and nutrients.

I Have Them And They Aerate My Tank, Also They Are Great Oxygen Level Measurers As They All Go Towards The Top When Tank Is Getting Low On Oxygen :)

I've had MTS in my tank for about 2 years now. I use to have other smaller snails in my tank but once my convicts grew they began to eat them.

In the beginning, the MTS reproduced like crazy. I started with 20 or so and after a few months, a flip of the light at night would have revealed hundreds of tiny MTS.

Of course in the day time they would all be gone.

2 years later, i rarely see any. They are still alive in the tank but their numbers have dwindled. I'm not sure if it's my convicts feeding on them, but if i flip on my lights at night i can see maybe 1-2 large (1/2" or so) MTS and maybe a dozen or so smaller MTS.

Might have to order a few more to add to the tank. I liked their presence.

How fast do these snails breed?

I have a couple of clown loaches in my 56G which appear to be keeping the platy levels in check, since Clowns are also partial to snails I'm just thinking about how many I would need to ensure that the clowns didn't wipe them out in one swoop
