Hi guys, I want to start keeping Malawi Cichlid but want to make sure I know what i'm getting into and what needs to be done to make sure the fish have the right environment, water quality etc

Can anyone recommend a good book(s) for me to read up on. I'm not an avid reader so nice pictures and diagrammes would be nice

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Ad Konings book
Malawi Cichlids in their natural habitat, 4th ed "This fourth, completely revised edition of the definitive study of Lake Malawi cichlids discusses and illustrates more species (843 species of which 822 are shown in photos) than any previous publication. Basing his study on more than 1500 hours of underwater observations all over the lake (36 expeditions), the author characterizes the species by their habitat preference, distribution, and coloration. More than 1750 excellent photographs — many never published before — illustrate the cichlid fauna of the entire lake. Almost all of these photographs were taken in the lake and show the fishes in their natural habitat.
"

It just came out is an expensive book. Might see if local libraries carry it yet. Or check on getting the 3rd edition(Malawi Cichlids in their natural habitat, 3rd ed. (2001)). I have the 2nd edition and am pleased with it.

From the description it doesn't look like it will help me keep them, or did i misunderstand?

Thanks,

Jimm

It will help with showing you the kinds. In the second edition it talks about:

1. Intro
2. Natural Environment
3.The aquarium
4.Water and filtration
5.Food and feeding
6. Breeding
7.Diseases
8.Aulonocara group
9.Haplochromis group
10.Mbuna
11.Large predators
12.Index
I would imagine it'd be similar. See if you can go to a book store to look at it (if you can't find it at the library).
