I have started keeping malawis all mbuna. Things were going well for a couple of weeks but now there seems to be a lot of algae (green & brown) I think this is mainly down to the increase in natural light. I have read that the mbuna eat algae but they dont seem to be touching this, is there anything I can do? I was thinkin of some kind of plec but I would want one from the malawi region, dont know if they exist though?

It sounds like blue green algae (Cyanobacter bacteria). If it wipes off in pieces or sheets and smells musty, and if it feels slimy then it is blue green.

Fish won't eat it and it normally occurs from excess nutrients and low oxygen levels. The wrong colour light can encourage it.

Try to syphon it out each day and do more water changes and gravel cleans. Reduce the amount of dry food going into the tank and make sure any uneaten food is removed immediately.

Just sounds like normal algae to me .. funny they aint touching it though. Is there no gracing at all ?? Is it covering all your decor or is it free-floating ?

A pick would help if poss ..
